Billie Eilish Eyes Film Debut in Sarah Polley's 'The Bell Jar'

Billie Eilish is about to make the leap from pop superstar to movie star. The singer is in advanced talks to make her film acting debut in a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, directed and written by Sarah Polley, with Focus Features set to distribute.
Let that pairing sink in for a second. Polley, who won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Women Talking in 2023, is one of the sharpest filmmakers working right now when it comes to stories centered on women navigating pain, identity, and survival. Plath's only novel — a semi-autobiographical account of a young woman's descent into mental illness — is exactly the kind of material Polley handles with rare precision.
And then there's Eilish, whose entire artistic identity has been built on unflinching honesty about depression, anxiety, and emotional turbulence. She's not just a famous face being dropped into a prestige project for the sake of headlines. There's a real creative logic here.
Eilish isn't a total stranger to the screen, either. She popped up in Donald Glover's 2023 series Swarm, and she's already a two-time Oscar winner herself for co-writing original songs for No Time to Die and Barbie alongside her brother Finneas. But a leading film role is a different beast entirely — and she seems to know it.
“She's not just a famous face being dropped into a prestige project for the sake of headlines.”
"I used to say that I hated acting. But the truth is, when I was little I loved it! My mom and dad were both actors. So is my brother, Finneas. And it was my dream to be in a movie," she told NME.
The Bell Jar has been adapted once before, in a 1979 film that didn't exactly leave a lasting mark. Plath's novel has long been considered tricky territory — deeply beloved, culturally loaded, and resistant to anything that feels shallow or exploitative. Polley's involvement goes a long way toward signaling this won't be that. She stepped away from a live-action Bambi remake before signing on here, which tells you something about where her priorities are.
No release date or additional casting details have been announced yet. But this is one to keep on your radar — it's shaping up to be one of the most interesting artist-to-actor crossovers in recent memory.
