Gorillaz Make SNL Debut, Albarn Vows the Band Will Never Die

Gorillaz checked off a major career milestone Saturday night, making their long-awaited debut on Saturday Night Live — and if Damon Albarn has his way, it won't be the last time the animated outfit graces a stage without him.
The virtual band performed two songs during the Ryan Gosling-hosted episode: "The Moon Cave" from their new UK No. 1 album *The Mountain*, and their iconic 2001 debut single "Clint Eastwood." The former featured a jaw-dropping guest lineup of Asha Puthli, Black Thought, and Anoushka Shankar. For the latter, Del The Funky Homosapien joined the crew to deliver the track that started it all 25 years ago.
The performance marked Albarn's first-ever appearance on the legendary late-night sketch show — a surprising gap in the résumé of one of British music's most prolific figures. Host Gosling introduced the band while still wearing a prosthetic cyclops eye from a previous sketch, adding to the surreal energy of the night. It was Gosling's fourth time hosting, though the actor apparently thought it was his fifth.
The evening had an extra jolt of star power when Harry Styles popped up in the audience ahead of his own double-duty hosting and performing gig next week, prompting cast member Sarah Sherman to lose her composure entirely.
“"It may be interesting to be just there in the background for the next generation to start off," he said.”
But the bigger headline may have come off-stage. In a new interview with the Associated Press, Albarn and Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett revealed they've been thinking about succession — specifically, handing the project off to a younger creative team.
"The cartoon is more important than the people," Albarn said, "although the people are very important." Hewlett echoed the sentiment, calling the idea of passing the torch "fun," and comparing it to the evolution of classic animation properties like Bugs Bunny — though the historical parallel he drew was a bit shaky.
Albarn envisions a future where he and Hewlett step into the background while a new generation takes the wheel. "It may be interesting to be just there in the background for the next generation to start off," he said.
It's a bold vision for a project that's already proven remarkably durable. With *The Mountain* debuting at No. 1 in the UK and the band finally conquering Studio 8H, Gorillaz aren't slowing down — they're planning for immortality.
